Tom Feakins

Tom Feakins is a Master Mariner with extensive maritime experience, having served up to the rank of Chief Officer SDPO. His expertise spans a diverse range of vessels, including harbour tugs, anchor handling tugs, buoy tenders, survey vessels, offshore supply vessels, private yachts, and cruise ships. Throughout his career at sea, Tom has operated in global locations, navigating piracy zones, conducting ice navigation, and performing dynamic positioning operations.

Tom spent two years as a Pilot in Scotland, piloting a variety of vessels such as bulk carriers, tankers, and mobile offshore drilling units. During this time, he developed a management system and procedures to ensure compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code. Since 2019, Tom has been active in the oil and gas and wind industries, serving as a towmaster and marine consultant on various projects and tows.

Tom has experience in assisting with a number of varied ‘wet’ matters, most recently providing assistance as an expert, to international salvors in connection with the LOF salvage of the distressed vessel 'Portland Bay'.

An active contributor to industry best practice publications on ECDIS, Tom is also a revising author of the Oilfield Seamanship Series. He is committed to professional development, frequently conducting coaching sessions for individuals preparing for Master Mariner and Chief Officer exams. Tom holds a BA in History from Lancaster University, a BA in Professional Practice, an MSc in Shipping Operations, and a certificate in Psychology.

Since 2017, Tom has provided marine technical advice on a wide variety of legal cases, including LOF, safe port and safe berth, seaworthiness and collisions.
